The image of Sweden as an attractive life sciences market, known for its strong research environment and high level of innovation, is increasingly being challenged by growing global competition and geopolitical uncertainty.

In particular, the introduction of the U.S. Most Favored Nation pricing policy has, over the past year, fundamentally changed the conditions and playing field for both the global pharmaceutical industry and Europe’s competitive landscape. This new reality reinforces a long-term trend in which fewer clinical trials and investments are directed towards small markets and low-price countries such as Sweden. As a result, Swedish patients are gaining access to fewer new medicines.

To reverse this trend, both immediate action and structural reforms are needed at the European and national levels. The health benefits of medicines and the broader societal value of innovation must be given greater weight to strengthen Sweden’s competitiveness. The Swedish Government’s initiative to reform the country’s complex and outdated system for the allocation of responsibilities and financing of medicines through a public inquiry is a welcome step, but it is not sufficient to secure a strong Swedish life sciences sector. Action is also needed in the short term, and the Government’s assignment to the Dental and Pharmaceutical Benefits Agency (TLV) to review society’s willingness to pay for medicines is therefore a positive development.

Sofia Wallström, CEO of Lif – the research-based pharmaceutical companies and Board Member of the European industry association EFPIA, will discuss these challenges during the seminar and share her perspectives on potential solutions in both the short and medium term.
